Traffic Signal Information

Traffic Signal Information

There has been a great deal of interest regarding the possibility of traffic signals being installed at Charleston National.  Below is the most recent information we have received.  We have been told   the Town will monitor the intersection upon the opening of the 6 lane section to make sure safe and efficient operations are occurring.
 1.  The traffic signal warrant analysis performed for this intersection as part of the project development phase for the widening indicates required warrants are not met at this intersection.  This is based upon mainline traffic volumes, minor (side-street) traffic volumes, number of travel lanes, travel speed, crash history and other various factors.  As such, the location will not have a signal installed as part of the widening project.  Another issue considered in the warrant analysis is the accessibility of the existing Park West Boulevard signal for drivers in Charleston National desiring to travel southbound on US 17.  This enables a signalized left-turn as opposed to an unsignalized left-turn.  This is not to say that at some point in the future a signal won’t be warranted at this location, but it will likely be dictated by additional development within Carolina Park.
2.      2.  The six lane widening project will actually promote easier side-street turns/crossings in that the added capacity induces more gaps in traffic by enabling through traffic to more quickly pass the intersection.
3.       3. The widening project includes sidewalks on each side of the roadway for the entire 5 miles of widening.  This will enable pedestrians to access an upgraded US 17/Park West Boulevard signalized intersection that will include signalized pedestrian crossings and crosswalks.
